Description

Prisoner name: Robert Goodrich Iliffe.

Prisoner age: 35.

Court and date of trial: Leicester Borough Sessions, January 183e.

Crime: Stealing a silver tankard, value £10, from the dwelling house of William Facer, publican, on 18 December 1833.

Initial sentence: Transportation for life.

Gaoler's report: Had a most excellent character given him by many respectable persons.

Annotated (Outcome): Sentence commuted to 12 months imprisonment.

Petitioner(s): 12 jurors, undersigned by William Facer, the prosecutor.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Good character; jury and prosecutor recommend mercy; sentence severe for crime.

Other papers: Letter from Edward Goulburn of Brick Court, Middle Temple, trial judge, forwarding copy of case notes and stating that, left to his discretion, the sentence would have been 12 months imprisonment.
