Description

Folio 163: William Fearson, Padstow, Cornwall. He lost his ship, the Humber transport of which he is now the Master, being formerly the Chief Mate, following the death of the owner and former Master, Richard Raikes, in Kingston, Jamaica in April 1741. He was discharged from the transport service and told to proceed to Port Royal and join the convoy appointed for such transports. The fleet was given orders by Mr. Wallas to sail with the Dunkirk man of war, which would give protection, but he would loose the benefit of 2 months pay and, being Winter time and having only 4 well men did not wish to sail. He asked the Commander if he could spare me a few hands but this was refused. After leaving Port Royal about 20 ships lost contact with the Dunkirk and met heavy gales. He gives an account of the voyage and the fate of the ship.
