2775. Clinton to Tonyn. Headquarters, Charlestown. Acknowledges previous letters. Thanks him for his assistance. Will replace by the earliest opportunity the ordnance stores spared and as far as possible other supplies. Has no power to send provisions having but scanty himself and more than 4,000 mouths to feed. Has ordered Campbell to Charlestown and has appointed Moncrief to superintend and to inspect the fortification in the Southern District. Will be happy to favour his wishes with regard to Lovett. This place surrendered by capitulation on the 12 May, by which 6,000 prisoners and a large depot of stores and artillery were acquired. Will leave in a few days leaving Cornwallis in command.
