The dying speeches of Home, Roobottom and Lyon were taken from the prisoners after they read them to the crowd, and are included. Dated at Penrith. Enclosing:

Folio 85. The dying speech of David Home. Describes his 'horror' at seeing the British 'constitution' shaken and the country oppressed. For these reasons he supported his 'royal master' [James Francis Edward Stuart] in the [Jacobite] rebellion.

Folio 86. The last words and dying speech of John Roobotham, a carpenter and weaver from Manchester [Lancashire], aged 35. Says that he willingly to dies for the house of Stewards [Stuart] and the 'Church of Rome' [Roman Catholicism].

Folios 87-95. The dying speech of Robert Lyon AM, priest. Describes the persecution of the [Episcopal] Church in Scotland, particularly by the Duke of Cumberland, and declares his detestation of both Roman Catholicism and Presbyterianism. Outlines his belief in 'passive obedience' and 'the divine right of Kings', and condemns the current monarchy as traitors. Declares that he joined 'the Prince's' [Charles Edward Stuart] cause to serve as their priest. Praises the conduct of the [Jacobites], describing the destruction of St Ninian's Church [Stirling, Stirlingshire] as accidental. Forgives George Miller, the prosecutor at his trial, and apologises to William Baird for calling him as a witness. Finally, he urges his countrymen to consider the cost of 'violating Gods Laws', and urges on them the fidelity and allegiance they owe their 'native and only rightful sovereign'.

Folios 96 - 98. Copy of the dying speech of Robert Lyon, as above. Additional text describes Lyon administering the Eucharist to prisoners, including Thomas Copoch [Coppock, the Jacobite Bishop of Carlisle, Cumberland]. There is also a passage quoting Francis Buchanan of Arnprior, who denies the murder of Stewart of Glenbucket, despite the victim being found dead in his house. Dated at Penrith on 18 October 1746.
