Folio 444.
To: The Local Government Act Office.
From: Josiah Pople, Chairman of the Sewer Authority, St George [Gloucestershire].
Letter acknowledging receipt of a letter dated 1 July 1868 the accompanying copy of a letter from Mr Wadham dated 30 June 1868, with reference to the sewerage of a certain part of the parish of St George. Pople states in reply that the resolution mentioned in his previous letter was not acted upon because 'no sooner had it been passed, than the local authority had good reason to believe that the Boundary Commissioners would recommend the annexation of the entire parish of St George to the Borough of Bristol, for electoral purposes'. He explains that this state of uncertainty induced the local authority to postpone action upon the said resolution, 'because the expense of curing any isolated case of defective drainage - such as that of Frog Marsh, the drain in question - might turn out to be useless expenditure, inasmuch as, in all probability the Municipal Authority of the Borough of Bristol would adopt a far more comprehensive and costly system of sewerage'. He adds, however, that as it appears that the parish of St George will now remain separate and distinct from Bristol, the local authority have given directions 'for the immediate remedying of the nuisance complained of, according to a plan laid before them; and that plan will be forthwith carried into execution'.
