Description

Prisoner name(s): Robert Brawn (Robert Braund) and Martha Sleeman.

Prisoner age: Robert Brawn; 25, Martha Sleeman 45.

Court and date of trial: Devon Summer Assizes August 1830.

Crime: Cattle Stealing. The prisoners stole a cow belonging to Samuel Fry of Holsworthy, [Devon].

Initial sentence: Death, commuted to transportation for life.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil.

Petitioner(s): Robert Brawn and Martha Sleeman (prisoners and siblings) of Clawton, Devon.

Martha Sleeman (prisoner) undersigned by 35 inhabitants of Holsworthy, Devon and Clawton, Devon including Samuel Fry (prosecutor).

48 inhabitants of Clawton, [Devon], Holsworthy, [Devon] and Pyworthy, [Devon] including Samuel Fry (prosecutor).

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoners' good character and industrious habits; never before been charged with any dishonest or improper conduct; Samuel Fry (prosecutor) refused to pay the debt he owed to Robert Brawn; Martha Sleeman took Samuel Fry's cow in place of the debt; Martha Sleeman has never before committed an offence and is truly repentant of her crime; she is unlikely to survive a voyage because she is in such a delicate state of health.
