Prisoner age: Elizabeth Watson 72; Mary Walker 68.
Court and date of trial: Cambridge General Quarter Sessions 14 July 1828.
Crime: Shoplifting in Thomas Woods's shop in the Saint Sepulchre parish of Cambridge and other shops in Cambridge, [Cambridgeshire].
Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.
Annotated (Outcome): Elizabeth Watson: free Pardon prepared 9 December 1831. Mary Walker died in 1830.
Other papers: A letter from John Payne Keeper of Cambridge Gaol asking for Walker and Elizabeth Watson to be removed from the gaol because of overcrowding; letter from William Lumby on the Hardy, Cosham, informing John Payne of Mary Walker's background and appearance; a letter forwarded by Christopher Hore, Deputy Clerk of the Peace from Mr Alderman Abbott stating that overcrowding in the Gaol will result in Gaol fever; list of prisoners in Cambridge gaol 29 June 1829; a letter from the Mayor of Cambridge John Purchas stating that the convicts' conduct in prison has been good (annotated by Peel); a letter from the Mayor of Cambridge about the overcrowding of the Gaol and requesting that Walker and Watson be removed and pardoned (annotated by Peel); list of female convicts under sentence of transportation in Cambridge gaol; 2 letters from Jane Dearing of 16 Portpool Lane, Grays Inn, Holborn, London on behalf of Mrs Forbes (Elizabeth Watson's daughter) to John Payne and Reverend Professor Samuel Lee, the gaol chaplain; a letter from John Payne enclosing the above 2 letters and stating that Mary Walker died in 1830; a letter from 2 JPs recommending a pardon for Elizabeth Watson; recommendation that Elizabeth Watson be pardoned from John Purchas, Mayor, Benjamin Cotton, W J Purchas and Thomas Coe, Magistrates on the grounds of her good conduct; Charles P Harris, Clerk of the Peace enclosing the above report.
