Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Betsey (master Eneas Skellenger).

Capture history: an American vessel (schooner), trading among the American Colonies possibly bound from Virginia, unladen; taken on 28 May 1780 in latitude 38°40'N, longitude 73°50'W by the loyalist privateer Revenge (William Thompson commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: within the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master James Annderson, 31 May 1780;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Thompson v The schooner Betsey, 31 May 1780;
  • [CP 3]: monition, 31 May 1780.

[Decision: condemned, if no response to the monition by 20 June 1780].

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1:-

  • SP 1: log book or journal, re-used, and containing a drawing of two deer, part of a poem called The Tempest, and some risqué verse.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-3; Ship's papers: 4-4 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2024].
