Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Apollo of Boston (master Alexander Mackay).

Capture history: an American merchant ship with a letter of marque (200 tons, 27 men) bound from Cap François, Saint Domingue to Norfolk, Virginia, laden with salt, sugar, rum, coffee and molasses; taken on 4 February 1783 off the Bahamas by HMS Amphitrite (Rupert George commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the Caribbean Islands to the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master George Carey master's mate, 15 February 1783;
  • [CP 2]: libel in George v The ship Apollo andher cargo, 15 February 1783;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of Jethro Rathbun, common hand, 19 February 1783;
  • [CP 4]: wrapper for ship's papers, with cargo list, addressed to Robert Bayard.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-9 (Massachusetts papers):-

  • SP 1-SP 5: official ship's papers;
  • SP 6: privateer's commission, 13 December 1782;
  • SP 7: printed instructions from Congress;
  • SP 8: crew list and agreement, 28 November 1782;
  • SP 9: letter to Captain James Chambers of the brig Ross, by Captain White, at St Thomas, [Danish West indies] from William Johnson of Richmond, Virginia; lack of tea in Richmond and Philadelphia; requests best souchong, best hyson for himself, and suggests investing in a box or two himself, 29 April 1782.
