Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Aimable Jeannette (master Charles Gardane, formerly Louis Justinart or Justinard).

Capture history: a French merchant ship (300 tons, 6 guns, 20 men) bound from St Marc, Saint Domingue to the first French port they could make, laden with sugar, cotton, coffee and indigo; taken on 4 March 1779 about 30 leagues from Belle Isle in latitude 47°30'N, longitude 7°W by the privateer Trimmer (Benjamin Hughes commanding), and brought first into Cork, Ireland, and then into London.

Intended voyage: from the Caribbean Islands to France.

Court papers numbered CP 1-6:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-79) brought into the river Thames by Hughes, 22 April 1779;
  • [CP 2]: attestation of the perishing nature of the cargo of sugar, caused by the shipping of a lot of water because of gales on the voyage from Cork to the River Thames, so that a commission of unlivery is needed, 22 April 1779;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of Antonio Marconi of Livorno, mariner, taken at Weymouth, 23 April 1779;
  • [CP 4]: deposition of Charles Gardane, taken at Doctors' Commons, 23 April 1779;
  • [CP 5]: translations of the bills of lading;
  • [CP 6]: allegation, 15 may 1779.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-74 [75-79 are not here]:-

  • SP 1-SP 8: official ship's papers and ship's business papers;
  • SP 9: muster roll;
  • SP 10-SP 73: bills of lading and wrapper;
  • SP 74-SP 74B: mail in transit: a business letter from Noel Lubin to Messrs André Pavin and nephew, Rouen, enclosing an invoice and bill of lading.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-27; Ship's papers: 28-99 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2024].
