Description

Folios 229-230: William Ogilvy, HMS Magicienne, Downs. Advises his arrival with HMS Dromedary and part of the Jamaica convoy. 27 of them have passed Portland and more are expected besides those bound for Ireland, St. Georges and the Bristol Channels. Sending a list of all vessels, dispatches from the Commander in Chief, a copy of his journal and orders with Lieutenant Scolls. Advises he sailed on 26 July from Port Antonio with HMS Dromedary and 25 vessels and was joined by HMS Squirrel and a further 15 vessels that day and up to 6 August he was joined by a further 20 vessels. Advises he captured a small French schooner on 4 August, took the coffee on board and then sank her. HMS Squirrel parted company on 28 August and he has reason to believe that she has hit the Bushey Park, was damaged, and has had to bear for some port in America. Complains about the Masters of the Posthumous and Otter for deserting the convoy on 10 September. Advises that 12 vessels left the convoy on 29 September and the next day at sun up at Cape Clear he made the signal for the rest of the St. George and Bristol Channel vessels to part company, but because it was blowing so hard, it was difficult to ascertain which vessels left his convoy. Advises that on 1 October he saw a convoy of about 30 vessels bearing north. Sending a return of the Regiment of York Hussars embarked in the ships of war and asks for directions respecting them.
