Description

Folios 384-385: Richard Henry Muddle, 22 Arundel Street, Strand, [London]. Acknowledges receipt of letter via his Agent for payment of £80 for the conveyance of Major General Ramsey from his late Government to the Island of Tortola. States that along with his family and staff, he was on board two weeks and it was agreed, via Admiralty instructions, that he would be paid £60 a week for their passage. Requests reimbursement of the balance due. Also received orders for the conveyance of Govenor Fitzroy Jeffreys Grafton McLean to Headquarters in Barbados as instructed by Sir James Leith, Commander of the Forces, in forming a part of the Military Establishment of the Ceded Islands at an estimated cost of £120. In executing this order the cost outlay was £300. Requests reimbursement for the balance due.

Folios 388-389: Richard Henry Muddle, 22 Arundel Street, Strand, [London]. States he has forwarded various documents relating to recompense for the passage of Governors Ramsey and McLean but has recevied no reply. Encloses a duplicate copy [folios 390-391] along with certificates of the service and requests a response.

Folios 386-387: enclosure with folios 384-385. Admiralty note, undated. States that Captain Richard Henry Muddle had no order to carry Major General Rumsay but as he was placed to move the garrison of the Ceded Islands from off Croix to Tortola by Sir James Leith, he conveyed the Major General and his staff in this capacity. As he was on board 14 days, a total of £80 was due in recompense. This is contested by Captain Muddle on the grounds that he was a Govenor, so higher expenses are due. The same occurs with hosting Lieutenant General Fitzroy Jeffreys Grafton McLean. Asks for a decision at which rate he should be paid.

States he has forwarded various documents relating to recompense for the passage of Governors Ramsay and Fitzroy Jeffreys Grafton McLean but has recevied no reply. Encloses a duplicate copy [folios 390-391] along with certificates of the service and requests a response.

Acknowledges receipt of letter via his Agent for payment of £80 for the conveyance of Major General Ramsay from his late Government to the Island of Tortola. States that along with his family and staff, he was on board two weeks and it was agreed, via Admiralty instructions, that he would be paid £60 a week for their passage. Requests reimbursement of the balance due. Folio 392: enclosure with folios 384-385. Letter dated 10 May 1815 from Lieutenant Governor Fitzroy Jeffreys Grafton Maclean, Barbados to the Admiralty. Confirms that on quitting Government he embarked on HMS Columbine under the command of Richard Henry Muddle on 15 April 1815 and proceded to Barbados in order to procure passage to England. States he was on board 14 days and disembarked on 29 May 1815.

Folios 393-393a: enclosure with folios 384-385. Letter dated 18 April 1815 James Leith, Commander of the Froces, Headquarters, Old Road, Tortola to the Admiralty. Certifies that HMS Columbine was emplyed in conveying Major General Ramsey and his staff from St Croix to Saint Thomas' and then to Tortola on military duty.

Folios 394-395: enclosure with folios 384-385. Orders dated 8 March 1815 from Sir Charles Durham, Rear Admiral of the Red, HMS Tigre, Carlisle Bay, Barbados to Captain Richard Henry Muddle, HMS Columbine. Orders to join the convoy bound for Jamaica and ramining with it until it joins HMS Royalist and to then proceed to Antigua. States he should communicate with Sir James Leith, Commander of the Forces, and establish if it is his intention to evacuate the Island of Santa Cruz and St Thomas' and if so to follow his orders with regard to convoying vessels and stores. If not, then he should proceed to Carlisle Bay, Barbados to join him.

Folios 396-397: enclosure with folios 384-385. Letter dated 17 March 1815 from Sir James Leith, Commander of the Forces, Antigua to Captain Richard Henry Muddle, HMS Columbine. Encloses a Memorandum of Instructions [folios 398-399] setting out orders realting to the disposal of troops at the Islands of Santa Cruz and Saint Thomas' in consequence of Rear Admiral Sir Charles Durham having given him the use of HMS Columbine.

Folios 398-399: enclosure with folios 384-385. Letter dated 17 March 1815 from Sir James Leith, Commander of the Forces, Headquarters, Antigua to Captain Richard Henry Muddle, HMS Columbine. Instructions for the removal of troops, artillery and stores from Antigua, Santa Cruz and St Thomas'. In addition adds that 40 slaves at Tortola of the Cordelarias's Cargo are now prize slaves and have been taken into the King's service and about 100 men and boys and 10 women of the Altrivedo's cargo will also need transporting.

Folios 400-401: enclosure with folios 384-385. Letter dated 18 April 1815 from Sir James Leith, Commander of the Forces, Headquarters, Old Road, Tortola to the Admiralty. Confirms that HMS Columbine was employed in conveying Major General Ramsey and staff fom Santa Cruz and St Thomas's and from there to Tortola on military duty. Confirms they were on baord HMS Columbine form 1 April 1815 to 14 April 1815.
