Description

Folios 179-182: John Maxwell, HMS Favourite, Spithead. Joined the East India fleet at Madera 23 June. Arrived at Goree 13 July. Gave Captain Davis, HMS Albacore his orders. Arrived Cape Coast 19 August. Completed water and provisions. Sailed along Blight of Benin anchored 30th at Portuguese trading place Ajudah [Ouidah]. Reports intercepting Portuguese slave traders. Found the fifty five slaves bound in irons so closely packed on the Portuguese San Jesu that he brought them on board to prevent them suffocating. Arrived Serra Leone with Joseph brig in tow 27th. Governor [Sir Charles William] Maxwell said Englishmen had set up slave factories which he burnt. Malignant fever broke out killing Lieutenant Moorhouse. Midshipmen Maxwell and Reid are recovering. Mr Ackney, Gunner died of dysentery. Says Rio Pongo known to be prejudicial to health of Europeans. Encloses certificates [no longer present] for Thomas Shaw, acting Gunner, Matthew Black acting Lieutenant exchanged with Lieutenant Thomas Atkinson, HMS Plover as he'd no officers after the fever.
