Description

Folios 210-211: Donald McLeod, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. Responding to Admiralty letter of 17 June advising him that 20 men received at Plymouth had been found unserviceable and mis-rated. Says he is sorry that 7 of the cases were surgical and had been missed by the examining surgeon. But he is at a loss regarding most of the others, and puzzled to know how he should proceed - he encloses a list of the men in question, saying he had rated 7 as ordinary seamen, impressed as seafaring men, none of them were landmen, whom he is forbidden to impress, the 5 rated at landmen volunteers were all over 18. Points out that if he had not adhered to the regulations hw would have been exposed to prosecution from the 'numerous lawyers... continually on the lookout' for such things. His ratings had been altered at Plymouth and he asks for guidance on what ratings he is to give in future.

Folio 212: enclosure with folios 210-211. The list of 20 men said on survey to be unserviceable or mis-rated, impressed or enrolled in May by Lieutenants Archbold, Timmins, Walker and Evans. Names are James Ashburn, James Bell, William Cato, James Hamilton, William Baitson, William (alias John) Thomas, Samuel Perry, William Bryant, Ralph Thorp, John Flanigan, Isaac Boyley, John Francis, George Hudson, Joseph Halbert, Henry Johnson, John Gay, John Finister, James McLaughlin, John Harper.
