Folios 97-98: Nicholas Ingram, Sea Fencibles, Weymouth. Covering letter for the enclosed [not present] return of Volunteers for the Sea Fencibles Raised in the Weymouth, Portland and Abbotsbury and he believes that there is not a Man among them which does not clearly come under the Instructions of Enrolment but at Lulworth most of the Men on the Coast or Landsmen they risk much to continue under the Command of Captain Augustus Brine & did not by any means enroll themselves in order to avoid being raised in the Army as they know they was liable to take their chance for the draft. Her awaits their directions. There was a Company at Chaldon [Chaldon Herring in West Chaldon] one and half miles from the Coast which he ordered Captain Augustus Brine to discharge and he encloses a letter he received from Captain Brine. He reports he has received the Press Warrant bur is at a loss to know how to make them useful without a Gang & rendezvous to secure the men as there is nor a ship in Weymouth or Portland Roads. He also encloses a letter from Mr George Thomas son of Sir George Thomas who resides in Weymouth requesting him to send to their Lordships that he has enrolled himself as a Volunteer Sea Fencible without Pay and he attend the exercises regularly.
Folios 99-100: enclosure with folios 97-98. Letter dated 14 August 1803 by George Thomas. Weymouth, to Nicholas Ingram, Sea Fencibles, Weymouth. States that he has a Cutter of about thirty six tons capable of carrying a twelve pound carronade which is available for any emergency
Folio 101: Enclosure with folios 97-98. Letter dated 16 August 1803 by Augustus Brine, to Nicholas Ingram, Sea Fencibles, Weymouth. As directions he has discharged the 34 Men presenting in the Villages of Chaldon [Chaldon Herring in West Chaldon]. & Winfrith [Winfrith Newburgh] from the Corps of Sea Fencibles. The men all declare that they did not come forward with any idea of being seconded from the Ballot for the Army of Reserve. They just wanted to volunteer for the Sea Fencibles.
