Description

Folios 115-118: James Dunbar, HMS Poulette, Falmouth. Reports via HMS Nimrod that he has entered the Channel with the trade from Lisbon. He put into Port because of the weather but has since been held in quarantine due to irregularities in certificates relative to the cotton from the Levant. Requests that an application is made to the Treasury to secure their release. Encloses a report on the state and condition of his ship, which has for two and a half years been in a poor state.

Folios 119-120: enclosure with folios 116-118. Copies of four letters written to James Dunbar, HMS Poulette. The first is from J Gambier, Lisbon, 2 August 1805, asking that an intelligence report from Oporto saying the enemy fleets were off Vigo on 27 July 1805 be dispatched to Lord Nelson in Lagos Bay as fast as possible. Also asks for protection for a convoy to England. The second is from Vice Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, HMS Dreadnought off Cadiz, 5 August 1805 ordering him to deliver dispatches to His Majesty's Consul in Lisbon and to then follow orders from Admiral Montagu. The third is from Vice Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, HMS Dreadnought, off Cadiz, 7 August 1805. Orders to proceed as fast as possible to deliver a dispatch containing intelligence and a letter from Lord Strangford to Vice Admiral Lord Nelson from His Majesty's Charge d'Affair at Lisbon. The last is a secret memo written by Rear Admiral Robert Calder, on HMS Prince of Wales, 22 August 1805, ordering him to rendeyvous with him off Cape St Vincents on his way to meet Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood at Cadiz.

Folio 121: enclosure with folios 116-118. William Cornwallis, HMS Ville de Paris, at sea to James Dunbar, HMS Poulette, 3 October 1805. Believes that separate squadrons of the enemy are nearby with a vew to intercepting the convoy, orders him, along with the Convoy, to keep Windward of the Squadron until the wind is favourable to proceed into the Channel.

Folio 122: enclosure with folios 116-118. James Dunbar, HMS Poulette at Sea to James Hawes, HMS Moucheron. 3 October 1805. Reports he will put into port for water due to having Captain Zacariah Mudge and 45 of the Crew of the late HMS Blanche on board. Orders that these Officers and Crew should be taken on board HMS Moucheron and delivered to Plymouth, where he should report to the Commander-in-Chief.

Folios 123-124: enclosure with folios 116-118. Copies of Orders from James Dunbar, HMS Poulette. Copies of four orders given by James Dunbar, HMS Poulette. The first is to Captain Pearce, HMS Alcion, 24 August 1805, and the second is to Captain John Sykes, HMS Nautilus, 24 August 1805, telling them both to to put to sea and deliver intelligence to Vice Admiral Sir Robert Calder at Cape St Vincent. The last two letters are to Lieutenant John Cook Carpenter, HMS Milbrook, 11 and 12 September 1805, ordering him to proceed immediately and take on board the officers and crew of HMS Blanche and convey them to England.
