Description

Folios 598-599: James Caulfeild [Caulfield], Regulating Captain, North Shields. Reports on the case of James Webster who was sent to the Nore in HMS Tickler, and returns the enclosures. Webster was impressed on shore by Lieutenant James Glasford Gooding at Newcastle on 10 June as his indenture was incorrect or had been altered. The Master, Robert Gothard, produced an affidavit saying the original indenture had been lost and that a substitute document was drawn up, but he refused to produce this.

Folios 600-601: enclosed with folios 598-599. Letter from Robert Gothard, Newcastle to the Admiralty dated 19 June 1815. His apprentice James Webster was impressed on 9 June because he could not produce the man's indenture document. Encloses a affidavit explaining the circumstances, which are attested to by William Sinclair, the Master of the Captain Jackson of Newcastle. He gave the Impress officer the Admiraly protection which was obtained for Webster by production of the original indenture. Asks for his discharge.

Folio 602-603: enclosed with folios 598-599. Affidavit sworn by Robert Gothard, ship owner, and William Sinclair, Master of the ship Captain Jackson of Newcastle, before Notary Public William John Grey and dated 12 June 1815. Mr Gothgard declares that James Webster, legally apprenticed to him and carrying an Admiralty protection, was impressed at Newcastle and is being held aboard the tender at Shields. The indenture was dated 11 January 1815 and was lost when the vessel sank at sea. Mr Sinclair declares that he was the Master of the ship, which collided with the Peggy of Shields in Bridlington Bay and sank. The affidavit is sworn again before Mayor Benjamin Sorsbie. Folio 603:

Folios 604-605: enclosed with folios 598-599. Admiralty protection certificate granted to James Webster as an apprentice of Robert Gothard of Newcastle and dated 1 August 1812.
