- Folio 697. A second draft letter from the Poor Law Board to J and W Rees Mogg [John Rees Mogg and William Rees Mogg], Clerks to the Guardians of the Clutton Poor Law Union, acknowledging receipt of their letter dated 24 September 1853 regarding the appointment of Mr Henry Stevens to the office of schoolmaster at the workhouse for a trial period of two months. Under the general regulations the guardians are not vested with the authority to appoint a schoolmaster for a limited period. The guardians' attention is drawn to Article 187 of the General Consolidated Order under which the present schoolmaster, Charles Harris hold his post. If Harris is willing to resign then Stevens can be appointed, if he declines then the Board will have to consider whether there are sufficient grounds for dismissal. The guardians have been premature as there was no vacancy to be filled. Paper Number: 34519/1853. Poor Law Union Number 374. Counties: Somerset.
