The Surgeon's noted that this patient, manifested a litigious disposition and disinclination to comply with the orders of the senior officers, upon the plea of incapacity from his complaint. The survey on the patient took place on 11 September 1843, at Rio de Janeiro, in which the Surgeon mentioned to the surveying officers that he did not and never had considered this patient to be fit for the service, but at the same time the patient appeared to be in an equally good state of health and as effective as when he first joined the Fisgard, he could not, under any circumstances approve of the patient being invalided, especially as he had reason to belive that the patient's motive for entering this ship was to effect this very object with a view of obtaining a pension. A young English Surgeon lately arrived in this country and totally ignorant of the enormous power of a Chilian bit, who was present in the court yard, imprudently seized one of the reins and checked the animal so suddenly as to throw him on top of his rider. Mr. Paterson was immediately lifted up and carried into the hospital. The Surgeon sent Mr. John Houstone to observe the state of this patient.
