Description

Petition relating to the formation of St. Paul's Lodge, Monkwearmouth to Thomas Harper, Deputy Grand Master, Antients' Grand Lodge explaining that members sought a warrant for a Lodge at Monkwearmouth due to problems associated with crossing the River Wear, which prevents travel during inclement winter weather to attend meetings of St John's Lodge, No. 94 [SN 1462], Sunderland. The petition proposes Thomas Robertson as Worshipful Master, Henry Wilson as Senior Warden, Simon Elstol as Junior Warden with meetings to be held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. The petition is supported by Thomas Robertson, John McMillon, Mark Lumsdon, John Rochford, Robert Holburn, Isaac Messenger, William Gilley, Robinson Humble and William Frost of St John's Lodge, No. 94 [SN 1462], Sunderland; Henry Wilson and James Ord of Lodge at the Black Lion, No. 120 [SN 565], Newcastle; Simon Elstole of Lodge, No. 7, New York and William Ord of a Scottish Lodge. The Petition is supported by Robert Thompson, Worshipful Master, G[eorge] A[rmstrong] Dickson, Senior Warden, Simon Dodd, Junior Warden, Joseph Harrison, Treasurer, Thomas Forster, Secretary and fifty one other members (all named) of Newcastle-​Upon-​Tyne Lodge, No. 131B [SN 1460], Newcastle.

Administrative / biographical background

St. Paul's Lodge received a warrant from the Antients' Grand Lodge on 26 December 1812 to meet as No. 161B. It was granted a warrant held previously by a Lodge at the George, Whitechapel, Londonwhih had lapsed by 1775. The Lodge met in a Private Room in Monkwearmouth, Durham and met as No. 197 after the union between the Antients' and Moderns' Grand Lodges to form the United Grand Lodge of England in 1813. The Lodge failed to prosper and was erased in 1828.
