Description (What the record is about)
-
6 Oct 1880
Letter from Messrs Finney Bruff & Cass to Messrs Prior & Co. covering a copy letter from their client Mr P.S. Bruff [see below].
4 Oct 1880
Letter from Peter Bruff, Handford Lodge, Ipswich [Co. Suffolk] to Messrs F.B. & C. He has written to Mr Cass of the difficulties of Mr Gelson on not having the means for discharging a year's liabilities for coals (£600-£700) and rent to 29 Sept (£600). He encloses Mr Gelson's letters of 1 and 2 inst., on the matter. Before Mr Edward Bruff left for the U.S.A. £500 credit was requested by Mr Gelson & arranged by Mr E. Bruff with Messrs Prior & Co. to be paid by P. Bruff in a/c as from 2 June when settlement is effected. He asks that they see Messrs Prior & Co. and arrange for payment of the liabilities for rent ar coals, and for allowing Mr Gelson further credit to enable him to proceed properly with the conduct of the business which will require at least £1,500.
7 Oct 1880
Letter from Messrs Prior & Co. to Messrs Tucker & Lake covering a copy of the above. They ask that the liabilities for coals and rent be allowed to stand over until mid November by which time the accounts will have been passed and the balance of the purchase money paid. They have told Messrs F.B. & C. that they hope to make this arrangement, and that the funds necessary to allow Mr Gelson to forecast his arrangements for the future should be supplied by the purchaser.
7 Oct 1880
Letter from Messrs Prior & Co. to Messrs F.B. & C. They agree that Mr Gelson's funds "to forecast his arrangements for the future should be paid by the purchaser. They observe that the reason why Mr Gelson has found himself in these difficulties is that he has thought it wise not to resort to sales of stock by auction, and this as well as the fact that the funds to go to Mr Gelson would be for the new owners benefit, is another reason why Mr Bruff should supply the funds. Assuming that the coal & rent accounts can be postponed, £500 would answer every purpose.
