War diary 142 Coy - re operation 7/8/9 & 10 June 1917: "….two guns attached to the 22 London Bn were in charge of Sgts Butler & Sermon in the absence of an officer. The right gun of the two, under Sgt Butler, left the assembly trench with the first wave with a view to missing the barrage. Sgt Butler was wounded by a German bomber just as he had passed the first objective, but managed to bring his assailent down with a revolver bullet. A few seconds later, Pte Thomson was fatally wounded in the chest by a bullet. The rest of the team under Pte Moore carried on until held up by machine gun fire from the German third line…..";Other Notes: THOMSON, Private, W, 81394. 142nd Coy. Machine Gun Corps (Inf). 7th June 1917. Son of Mr. J. Y. Thomson, of 36, Rosebank, Carluke, Lanark. III. E. 9. Woods Cemetery - Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.;
