872. 6 and 8 Horse Sugar Plantation Engines, West Indies (ZAM, ZBA, ZBB, ZBC, ZBM, ZBN, ZBX, ZCK, ZCQ, ZCR, CY). Mar., Aug.-Oct. 1814, Mar., Jun., Jul., Sep., Oct. 1815, Feb. 1816. 2 items.
Ten 6 horse power independent crank engines, with 16 inch cylinders, 2 foot strokes, parallel motions, cast iron beams, cast iron connecting rods, A frames.
ZCK: 8 horse power independent crank engine, with 17? inch cylinder, 2½ foot stroke, parallel motion, cast iron beam, cast iron connecting rod, A frames.Reverse end view of the engine and cross-section of the boiler, plan of the engine house and boiler, side view of the engine, longitudinal section of the boiler.
Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 689. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 222, 224, 226.
These two sheets of drawings were used for eleven separate engines. Henry Hazleton assigned a portfolio number to each engine despite the fact that there were no individual drawings for the engines. The engines were as follows:
William Lushington Jr., Trinidad (ZAM) [Hazleton's Portfolio 872].
For Mr. Purcell, Harmony Hall Estate, Trinidad. Sugar plantation engine ordered by William Lushington Jr. The original drawings for this engine were made in Mar. 1814. This was the first 6 horse independent beam engine made by Boulton Watt & Co.
Gilbert Matthison, Jamaica (ZBA) [Hazleton's Portfolio 873].
For Thomas McKenzie, St. Thomas in the East, Port Morant, Jamaica. Sugar plantation engine ordered by Gilbert Matthison of 1 Lime St. Square, London. The original drawings for this engine were made in Aug. 1814.
Robert Allen, Jamaica (ZBB) [Hazleton's Portfolio 874].
For Robert Allen, 95 Royal Exchange, St. James St., London, for his own estate at Orange Cove, Hanover, Jamaica. Sugar plantation engine [?]. The original drawings for this engine were made in Sep. 1814. The drawings note that Allen was supplied with two boilers.
France Fletcher Yates & Co., Jamaica (ZBC) [Hazleton's Portfolio 875].
For the Harmony Hall Estate, Jamaica. Sugar plantation engine ordered by France Fletcher Yates & Co. of Liverpool. The original drawings for this engine were made in Oct. 1814.
Thomas & William King (ZBM) [Hazleton's Portfolio 876].
Sugar plantation engine [?] ordered by Thomas & William King of London. The original drawings for this engine were made in Mar. 1815. The drawing of the end view of the engine etc. has a note about the height of the Kings' boilers on the back. In the Catalogue of Old Engines Henry Hazleton confuses this engine with engine DA which, while made in 1815, was not appropriated to Thomas & William King until 1817.
Kingstons Lambert & Egan, Claremont Estate (ZBN) [Hazleton's Portfolio 877].
For Robert Kingston, Claremont Estate. Sugar plantation engine ordered by Kingstons Lambert & Egan of 55 Old Broad St., London. The drawings for this engine were originally made in Jun. 1815.
William & Roland Mitchell (ZBX) [Hazleton's Portfolio 878].
Sugar plantation engine [?] ordered by William & Roland Mitchell of Lime St., London. The original drawings for this engine were made in Jul. 1815.
Thomas Daniel & Sons (ZCK) [Hazleton's Portfolio 879].
For William Munro. Sugar plantation engine [?] ordered by Thomas Daniel & Sons of Bristol. The original drawings for this engine were made in Jul. 1815. This engine was an 8 horse engine.
Charles Lawrence, Jamaica (ZCQ) [Hazleton's Portfolio 880].
For Mr. Hall, Round Hill, Hanover, Jamaica. Sugar plantation engine ordered by Charles Lawrence. The original drawings for this engine were made in Sep. 1815.
France Fletcher Yates & Co., Jamaica (ZCR) [Hazleton's Portfolio 881].
For the Ashley Hall Estate, Jamaica. Sugar plantation engine ordered by France Fletcher Yates & Co. of Liverpool. The original drawings for this engine were made in Oct. 1815.
Campbell Bowden & Co., Demerara (CY) [Hazleton's Portfolio 882].
For P. McGarel, Hamburg Estate, Demerara. Sugar plantation engine ordered by Campbell Bowden & Co. of Bishopsgate St., London. The original drawings for this engine were made in Feb. 1816.See also: 4/94 (Engine Order Book No. 8).
