2/Lt Charles Milton Apperley, No 152 Coy MGC, att Gordon Highlanders, died 24/3/1918. Report : "wounded in the back 23/3/1918 (thought to be in the neighborhood of Arras) carried to a shell-hole and left with stretcher bearers who intended carrying him to a dug-out, with a view to a medical officer giving attention to the wounds already temporarily dressed. Conscious when left with stretcher bearers. Nothing heard since. I shall be extremely grateful for anything you can do. Yrs faithfully, HW Apperley.
Letter, 24/7/1918, from War Office to: JM Apperley, Fernlea,Ramsgate Road, Wilpshire, Blackburn "Sir, I am commanded by the Army Council to inform you that the following report concerning 2/Lt CM Apperley 51 Bn MGC reported wounded and missing 24/3/1918 (prev report w. & Msg 21/31918) appears in an official German list of dead from a Field Hospital received through the GenevaRed Cross Society - "Disc sent in by the Central Office for effects on 26/4/1918 - forwarded from Field Hospital" - In view of this report and the lapse of time since he was reported wounded and missing without further news of him being received, the Army Council are now regretfully constrained to conclude that 2/Lt Apperley died on or shortly after 24/3/1918"
