Recognizance

Thomas Rees, master of the 'Flora' of Tenby in South Wales, to give evidence on John Tredwyn's indictment against William Withiell for a felony: recognizance estreated.

Visiting magistrates to the gaol having reported gross negligence and misconduct on part of turnkeys: ordered that these magistrates may discharge, at their discretion, any offending turnkeys, and appoint others at a salary they think fit.

Proposal by John Vivian of Pencalenick, esq. to repair Kiggon bridge and roads leading thereto: accepted.

Bridge surveyor (west) to pay Joseph Thomas Austen, esq. £40 for the improvements made by him to drains and watercourses of St. Blazey bridge.

Bridge surveyor (east) to pay William Burt of Launceston £10 for his plans, model and trouble regarding rebuilding of Poulson bridge.

Continued appeal by St. Stephen by Launceston against order of 21 Sep. last for removal of Elizabeth Spry, singlewoman, from Egloskerry. Stated that by an indenture of 4 July 1826 E.S. a poor child (11) was bound to John Adams of St. Stephen until the age of 21, omitting the words "or the time of her marriage", but adding "according to the statute...". E.S. served J.A. at Cargentle in St. Stephen for 3 years, then her master went away, saying he would "give her up [at] her time" but he and his family never returned. E.S. remained at Cargentle with Timothy Ridgman who succeeded J.A. in the occupancy of Cargentle where she stayed for 12 months, except a fortnight, having made an agreement with him, received no wages, but had her meat and clothes. Later, still under 21, she hired herself to different persons, among them Mr. William Hornabrook, present overseer of Egloskerry and served him there. Court considered that E.S. still only 19, had avoided her indenture: order reversed. Egloskerry to pay St. Stephen £7 costs and maintenance.
