Description

Mainly from Tufton Beamish, including a few to his brother John ('Juan') in India, from the Middle East Force in North Africa, Feb 1943 - Mar 1944 (53 items)

TB travelled by sea from India in Feb 1943, and after passing through Cairo, was in Libya or Tunisia in Apr - May (see also CLW/1/1/1(d)); he saw action in the Tunisian Campaign (see especially no 11). By Jul he was back in Egypt, and apart from a course in Gaza in Sep remained there until Mar 1944. The latter period was fairly uneventful (though his letters are descriptive of the life), and in Dec - Jan he was seeking a move through his father's intervention with Maj Gen Laycock of the Royal Horse Guards (see nos 44, 47, 50). No 15 is from his brother John in India (Jun 1943, 394/99 Field Regiment RA); no 46 is from Lord Cecil (Dec 1943, a neighbour at Chelwood Gate). No 49 is incomplete; [See also CLW/1/1/1(d)]
