Note: John Holland was a friend of Joseph Wright of Derby the painter, an amateur artist and shown by this correspondence to have skills in picture restoration (see D37 M/H20/24-26). He worked as an embellisher of letters, that is he decorated official documents. Elsewhere in the Holland papers (see D37 M/H17/38) he is described as an embellisher to the King
