Description

Compiled by 'Louisa', probably a daughter of James Smyth Scott and sister of Robert H. Scott, (Director of the Meteorological Office in the 1860's,) and of Charles Brodrick Scott, (Headmaster of Westminster School, 1855-1883); for the connection of this family with the Benyon family see pedigrees in front of this catalogue.Loose letters from this volume have been removed see D/EBy/F49. The letters in this collection appear to have been selected for their interest as autograph letters from scientists, authors, and others. The majority are a ddressed to Robert Scott while in the Meteorological Office or as secretary of various learned societies, and to his friend, Sir Edward Sabine, from English and foreign fellow scientists, with a few letters to Charles B. Scott.A list of the letters, which are indexed under names of correspondents, is stored with the album.

Tait on Robert Scott, 1859 (p.5); Charles Scott from Lord Clarendon on the Public Schools Commission, 1868 (p.29); Sir Edward Sabine from Wyville Thomson, asking for support in his application for the Chair of Natural History at Edinburgh, 1870 (p.38); printed chart of the Gulf Stream 'Plate VII' with note in manuscript to E. Sabine from Captain M. F. Maury, c.1860 (p.40); letters from .Carpenter to Edward Sabine, 1889, on the cruise of the Porcupine, and to R. Scott, 1874, on sea temperature, etc., (p.42); R. Scott from F. L. McClintock on Greenland exploration, 1868 (p.43); Edward Sabine from Professor Quetelet on terrestial magnetism in French, 1873 (p.60); two notes taken from the ship's log of the Endeavour, at 82° ¾N., 1827 (p.69); Edward Sabine from John Richardson on Franklin's expedition, 1825 (p.70); and from F. Beaufort on winds, 1833 (p.71); Capt. F.R.M. Crozier, (H.M.S Terror), from A.F.Cardiner, c. 1840 (p.84); Edward Sabine from Italian and French meteorologists in French, 1865 (p.98) and 1825 (p.101); F.T.Temple from Edward Hawkins on admissions to Oxford university, 1869 (p.106); Edward Sabine from M.
